Career–Family Tension

Many young women want both a fulfilling career and a family but struggle to navigate the competing demands and timing of these important life goals.

The Problem

There is no one right path. There is your path.

Many young women are entering adulthood with more educational and career opportunities than previous generations, while also wanting meaningful relationships and the possibility of having a family.

The challenge is that career development, partnership, parenthood and financial independence can all require significant time and commitment, creating difficult questions about priorities, timing and whether it is possible to have a fulfilling life that includes all of them.

How It's Delivered

Two ways to bring this to your students

Option 1

An Engaging Presentation

30 min + 10 min Q&A

Using engaging visuals, real-world examples and evidence-informed research, this presentation explores the tension between career, relationships and family without presenting a single "right" path.

Students consider how different life choices involve different trade-offs, why there is no universal timeline for adulthood, and how intentional planning can help them make choices that reflect what they genuinely want.

Students leave with a clearer understanding that designing a fulfilling life involves making conscious choices about priorities and trade-offs, rather than trying to perfectly predict the future.

Option 2

Interactive Tutorial & Discussion

60–120 min

Students participate in an interactive workshop that helps them explore what they want their future to look like across career, relationships, family, lifestyle and personal fulfilment.

Rather than telling students how they should balance career and family, the workshop gives them a framework for making their own informed decisions.

Students explore different possible life paths, consider the trade-offs associated with each, and begin developing a flexible vision for a future that can adapt as circumstances change.

Interactive Learning Tools

Built into Option 2

Three purpose-built tools help students design a life that integrates career, relationships and family — on their own terms.

The Decision Compass

Students learn a practical framework for navigating major life decisions involving career, relationships, family and lifestyle — evaluating choices against their values, goals and priorities, not a predetermined timeline.

Designing Your Life

Students bring together their aspirations across the major areas of life, considering different possible futures and learning to design a life that balances career, relationships, family, health and personal fulfilment.

The Purpose Finder

Students explore the intersection between their strengths, interests, values and opportunities, considering career choices in terms of how work fits into the broader life they want to build.

Why These Tools?

There's no one perfect answer

Career–family tension is rarely solved by finding one perfect answer. It requires students to understand what matters to them, consider the trade-offs involved in different choices and develop a flexible approach to designing their future. These three tools help students answer three essential questions:

How do I make major life decisions with greater clarity?

How can I design a life that integrates career, relationships and family?

What kind of work will provide meaning while fitting the life I want?

"There is no perfect time — only intentional choices aligned with what matters most to you."

The Underlying Idea

A balanced, intentional approach

Together, these tools provide students with a practical, evidence-informed framework for navigating one of the most significant challenges of modern adulthood. Rather than viewing career and family as competing choices, students learn to think intentionally about how different parts of their lives can work together — and adapt their plans as life develops.
